Te Ara o Te Ata – Mt Messenger Bypass

The Project

Te Ara o Te Ata – Mt Messenger Bypass seeks to provide vastly enhanced road safety, durability, and traveling experience. The bypass consists of an entirely new 6km pathway from Uruti to Ahititi that circumvents the current steep, narrow, and winding path over Mt Messenger on State Highway 3.

It comprises two bridges measuring around 125m and 30m in length, along with a 235m tunnel. The route will be situated at a lower elevation and have a gentler slope compared to the existing road.

A significant program of environmental restoration and pest management covering 3,650 hectares is also a pivotal aspect of the project.

The Requirement

With the construction site running through steep natural vegetation the environmental aspect of the project provided significant challenges.

Multiple streams needed to be diverted and the high pH water from the tunnelling process needed a robust solution.

The Solution

The team played a significant part in the over pumping, and with the requirement of the pumps having to be airlifted into place there were strict weight limitations. Condor sourced and supplied specific pumps for this unique application.

Condor supplied multiple systems for the different water management challenges faced onsite, from treating TSS from construction activities, treating high pH water, along with real time water quality management systems.

With Condor offering both hire and purchase options, this offered flexibility to the team at Mt Messenger to purchase equipment that would be used for the duration of the project, yet offer short term hire for specific items providing the most efficient use of resources and ultimately reduce project cost.
