The Project

Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi - meaning 'the soothing waters of the Hutt River' - is one of New Zealand's most significant infrastructure programmes. This transformational project is reshaping Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai / Lower Hutt, combining critical flood protection, river restoration, transport improvements, and urban revitalisation in a single, landmark alliance programme.

Condor is proud to be part of the early works on this legacy project, supplying dewatering and water treatment solutions alongside contractor Brian Perry Civil.

The Dewatering & Water Treatment Challenge

Working in the early stages of a project of this scale requires precision from the outset. With trench excavation underway in close proximity to the Te Awa Kairangi / Hutt River, managing groundwater effectively and responsibly was essential.

The challenge: Dewater the trench efficiently while ensuring every drop discharged back to the river met strict environmental compliance standards. Any sediment-laden or non-compliant discharge would be unacceptable, both environmentally and legally.

The Solution: Submersible Pumping & Water Treatment

Condor deployed a four-pump dewatering configuration to manage groundwater across the site:

3x 4-inch submersible pumps installed in wells alongside the trench, drawing down the water table to keep the excavation workable

1x 4-inch surface pump operating within the trench itself to manage any residual water at the base

Water drawn from site passes through Condor's water treatment system before discharge. The result is consistently clear, fully compliant water being safely returned to the Hutt River - the very waterway this project is committed to protecting and restoring.

Environmental Compliance, Built In

At Condor, environmental compliance isn't an afterthought, it's the foundation of everything we do. On a project as culturally and ecologically significant as Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi, that responsibility carries even greater weight.

Te Awa Kairangi / Hutt River is a taonga (treasured resource) and awa tupua (treasured ancestral river) for Taranaki Whānui ki Te Upoko o Te Ika and Ngāti Toa Rangatira. Ensuring our discharge meets compliance standards isn't just about ticking boxes, it's about honouring the river and the communities it sustains.

Our water treatment systems are designed to perform consistently across variable site conditions, giving contractors the confidence to keep work moving without compromising environmental standards.

We look forward to continuing to support the wider alliance as this once-in-a-generation project takes shape.
